Vairao (Matiti), Tahiti, French Polynesia Cruise Port

Also known as Matiti, Vairao is a small, quaint port town and district on the southwest coast of Tahiti. Located just to the northwest of Teahupo’o, the famous surf town, Vairao Bay and its nearby lagoon are known for their relaxing, yet plentiful fishing spots. As the deepest bay in all of Tahiti, even the world’s largest cruise ships are able to set down anchor which makes it a prominent starting point for tourists. While visitors have the option to go directly to Teahupo’o from port, many remain on Vairao to take in the sights. Like most of Tahiti, this tropical destination is a paradise within itself. Along with beautiful flora, sandy beaches, and visually stunning peaks, comforts such as hotels, shops, and local cafes are also in abundance within town. Just outside of town, the surroundings become more remote and are rife for exploring during the course of a lengthy and rewarding hike.

• Like its more renowned neighbor, Vairao is also known for pristine surfing conditions; plus the cool, clear waters make for excellent snorkeling and scuba diving.
   
• Take a spirited hike to the cliffs Fenua Aihere and Te Pari which are accessible only by foot. At the top, enjoy a stunning beautiful panoramic view no matter where you stand.
   
• Vairao also has miles of welcoming beaches. Since their coastline stretches so far, it’s no daunting task to find a low-traffic spot to swim, dive, or sunbathe.
   
• If you travel further down the main road to Vairao’s outskirts, a place called Taravao offers a lookout point that overlooks the island from a height of nearly 2,000 feet.
