Trincomalee, Sri Lanka Cruise Port

Trincomalee, also known as Gokanna or Gokarna, is located in north eastern Sri Lanka. Besides being a busy port town, it’s also the capital of the Trincomalee District in the country’s Eastern Province, and has a population of over 100,000 people. Its position atop a long peninsula helps divide its inner and outer harbor, making for better transportation and movement in and out of the docks. Hindu culture is celebrated in Trincomalee and there are a number of stoic temples throughout the region reflecting the cornerstone of the world’s third largest religion. The city is also important to the Tamil people who are also well-represented with monuments. Within the city, mass transportation can be found within the Trincomalee Railway Station and an ancient ferry service that travels from the south side of the harbor to nearby Jaffna. Some of the country’s most scenic beaches are located just outside the city and offer pristine sands along refreshing waters.

• Koneswaram Temple is one of the busiest Hindu temples in the area. It’s beautifully decorated with statues and pictures of the gods in vibrant details and colors.
   
• For a safe and glorious beach getaway, head to Marble Beach. Not often crowded, and located next to miles of calm, crystal clear water, it’s the perfect place for families, couples or some much needed alone time.
   
• Sri Pathrakali Amman Temple is a masterfully decorated temple with a multi-layered, colorful outside. The inside has unique statues and paintings that come close to, but don’t quite live up to, the stunning exterior.
   
• Trincomalee was a naval station and its beautiful Trincomalee War Cemetery used to be for all service members, but became exclusively for the navy beginning in 1948.
