Trabzon, Turkey Cruise Port

For a visit to a historical city on the Silk Road, cruise through the Black Sea to the busy northeastern port of Trabzon, Turkey. The capital of Trabzon Province, Trabzon (formerly Trebizond) became an important trade gateway to Persia (now Iran) and Caucasus, blending together a fascinating mixture of languages, cultures, and religions for hundreds of years. Founded around 756 B.C. by Greek colonists from Sinope, today the city represents both the past and present: while some of Trabzon's major attractions date back to ancient times, the bustling city center provides plenty of modern shopping and dining opportunities. For total immersion, stroll through the Bazaar District (the city's oldest marketplace) which is flanked by Çarsi Cami, central Trabzon's largest mosque. With warm summers and cool winters, it’s the perfect destination for those who love a change of seasons. Here are some of our favorite experiences when cruising to Trabzon, Turkey:

  • Sümela Monastery can be found in the forests south of Trabzon, overlooking the area below from a steep cliff. Dating back to the 4th century, much of it has undergone heavy restoration, thanks to vandals. The Turkish government has turned it into a museum and now protects it from further harm; the best (and easiest) way to get the full experience is by guided tour.

  • The Atatürk Mansion (or Ataturk House Museum) is a gorgeous white three-story house featuring fantastic views and gardens. Originally built in 1903 for a wealthy banking family, it's now a history museum featuring archeological and ethnographic exhibitions.

  • Built between 1238 and 1263, and originally called Hagia Sophia (Church of Divine Wisdom), the pretty church was converted to the Aya Sofya Mosque and eventually into a museum. The interior still has gorgeous frescoes on its walls and intricate mosaic floors. Head over to the open-air tea garden for a rest and some refreshment.

  • Boztepe Hill is where the sea seems to meet the sky. Visit on a clear day to get the best views; other attractions include four sacred fountains, and a restaurant where you can enjoy a strong Turkish coffee or tea.
