• Those interested in archaeology will find the subterranean Kents Cavern an absolute must-see. Early humans lived here for about 700,000 years, and this UNESCO Global Geopark is a fascinating look into the ancient past. There's also an onsite coffee shop if you fancy a hot drink and a scone after wandering the chilly caves.
   
• One of Torquay's most famous beaches is Babbacombe, and you can get great views of the bay if you take the cliff railway to the top; you might also spot a dolphin or two swimming among the waves. While there, visit the Babbacombe Model Village. It is considered a fantastic example of an English model village (dragon included).
   
• Founded in 1196, Torre Abbey is now a historic building and art gallery. Originally used a Premonstratensian monastery, it's one of the UK's best-preserved medieval monasteries, and has a gorgeous garden in which to wander (chat up the beekeeper for some extra information about the plants).
   
• Literature buffs won't want to miss the Agatha Christie Mile, where you can take a tour and view plaques dedicated to the author's life and works. Not only was Christie born in Torquay, it was also the setting in some of her murder mysteries.
