Torquay, Devon, United Kingdom Cruise Port

Head southwest in England to find the popular seaside resort town and cruise port of Torquay, United Kingdom. Tucked inside the Torquay Harbour off of the English Channel in the county of Devon, the area coastline has earned the nickname "English Riviera" because of its lovely beaches and healthful climate. The area has been inhabited since the Paleolithic Era, as evidenced by found artefacts that date around 37,000–40,000 years ago, and Torquay was considered a relatively minor settlement until the Napoleonic wars. With an economy that originally focused on fishing and agriculture, this changed in the early 19th century, when members of the Royal Navy began to frequent the town. It soon became famous among the wealthy members of Victorian society, and went through an expansion when the Torre railway station opened in 1848. Here are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Torquay, Devon, United Kingdom:

  • Those interested in archaeology will find the subterranean Kents Cavern an absolute must-see. Early humans lived here for about 700,000 years, and this UNESCO Global Geopark is a fascinating look into the ancient past. There's also an onsite coffee shop if you fancy a hot drink and a scone after wandering the chilly caves.

  • One of Torquay's most famous beaches is Babbacombe, and you can get great views of the bay if you take the cliff railway to the top; you might also spot a dolphin or two swimming among the waves. While there, visit the Babbacombe Model Village. It is considered a fantastic example of an English model village (dragon included).

  • Founded in 1196, Torre Abbey is now a historic building and art gallery. Originally used a Premonstratensian monastery, it's one of the UK's best-preserved medieval monasteries, and has a gorgeous garden in which to wander (chat up the beekeeper for some extra information about the plants).

  • Literature buffs won't want to miss the Agatha Christie Mile, where you can take a tour and view plaques dedicated to the author's life and works. Not only was Christie born in Torquay, it was also the setting in some of her murder mysteries.
