Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago Cruise Port

Tobago is one of the islands that make up the Caribbean Island nation known as the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. After a long history of oppressive rule by different empires, including the French and British, Trinidad and Tobago gained independence from the British Empire in 1962 and became a self-governed republic by 1976. Scarborough is Tobago’s biggest city and major port town which has an area of around eighteen square miles and a population close to 25,000. A deep-water harbor opened there in 1991 so large cruise ships could pull into port as opposed to anchoring a considerable distance offshore. A regular ferry service connects this major port with Trinidad, which lies about twenty-two miles south of its sister island. Tobago is a tourist-based society with emphasis on fishing and diving exploration. Tobago has an impressive coral reef running beneath it—unlike Trinidad, which has none.

• The Shurland Nature Park is near the entrance of Tobago’s Main Ridge Forest Reserve. It’s a pleasant wide-open environment where the While-tailed Sabrewing Hummingbird can be seen in abundance.
   
• Tobago’s most popular beach is Pigeon Point Beach. This beautiful oasis has numerous shops, restaurants and bars along the coast, as well as some of the country’s whitest sands and clearest waters.
   
• Englishman’s Bay is a tucked away beach beyond an expansive forest. The secluded area is perfect for swimming and snorkeling in small groups.
   
• The many trails at Adventure Farm and Nature Reserve are exciting places to hike, as well as a good opportunity to see the island’s many species of bird.
