Located in western Iceland on the northern side of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Stykkisholmur is a town and municipality that serves as the area’s local commons and center for services and commerce. Its natural harbor became an important place for trade early on in Iceland’s history with its first trading post established in the 1550s. Today, while they still use the port for trade, the town’s two major industries are fishing and tourism. Stykkisholmur has a true subpolar oceanic climate, which may sound brisk but is actually the warmest of the polar climates. While every season isn’t exactly warm, the temperature generally doesn’t drop below zero like many places further south, thanks to the moderating effects of ocean currents. The town is very eco-conscious and was the first European community to receive the EarthCheck environmental certification, and was the first Icelandic municipality to start fully sorting its waste, earning the prestigious Blue Flag eco-label.

• Take a leisurely stroll around this quaint town and take note of the beautifully preserved old houses, some of which have been standing for hundreds of years.
   
• To balance out the old, the Stykkisholmskirkja church, which first opened its doors in 1990, has a stunning modern design. It’s massive, impressive appearance stands out among the skyline and draws in visitors straightaway.
   
• For a brisk, peaceful hike with an outstanding view, visit Helgafell, a small hill on the outskirts of town. Legend has it, if you can walk up it without turning back or speaking, you will be granted three wishes.
   
• For some alternative art, check out the Volcano Museum. This unique, international exhibition consists of art related to volcanic eruptions and their impact.
