Scrabster, Scotland Cruise Port

Travel north in the United Kingdom to find Thurso Bay; within its waters is the cruise port of Scrabster, Scotland. Scrabster Harbour is an important port in Scotland for fishing, and it's also just a couple of miles north of Thurso (the second largest town in the Scottish Highlands). As a former spot for Britain's royal family to disembark en route to visit the Queen Mother at her nearby holiday home at the Castle of Mey, other tourists are starting to take note of the area's beauty. It's sometimes referred to as the "Gateway to the North," thanks to the ferry system that takes passengers to Orkney and Shetland on a regular basis. Throughout the 1990s, Scrabster Harbour continued to expand, eventually turning its Old Fish Market pier into the new Jubilee Quay to accommodate more ship traffic. Here are some of our favorite experiences when cruising to Scrabster, Scotland:

  • Visit the Castle and Gardens of Mey and fall in love like the Queen Mum did in 1952. Originally built between 1566 and 1572, the castle was to be abandoned when she recused it and turned it into her summer home. Today, it's open to the public where you can take a stroll through the beautiful gardens and enjoy the award-winning Tearoom.

  • The Holburn Head Lighthouse was built in 1862, a necessity because of the growing success of the harbor. The light itself was discontinued in 2003, but it's still a photogenic building; a walk around the nearby headland provides excellent views of Dunnet Head and the Orkney Islands.

  • Get a look at local history at Caithness Horizons located in Thurso. The museum takes a look at the area from the time of its inception (about 416 to 359 million years ago) until the present. There are plenty of audiovisual displays, along with a gallery, tourist information, and an onsite café.

  • Take any number of wilderness tours offered in the area to see nature at its best. The northern coast of Scotland is full of flora and fauna, including marine life: watch for frolicking dolphins as you explore the shoreline.
