Ross Island, Andaman Islands, India Cruise Port

Within the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea lie the Andaman and Nicobar Islands; here you'll find the cruise port of Ross Island, India. Ross Island used to be the administrative headquarters within the Andaman and Nicobar Islands; a 1941 earthquake moved the HQ to nearby Port Blair, which is less isolated than Ross. Controlled by the Indian Navy, the island has points of interest that include leftover buildings from the British colonial period, as well as post-earthquake ruins. These have become popular tourist attractions, along with a penal settlement that was established in 1857 (mostly to punish anyone who challenged British authority during that period of time). Although there are no permanent towns on the island, there are frequent boat trips from Port Blair so visitors can experince this fascinating piece of Indian history. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Ross Island, India:

  • Managed by the Indian Navy (like most other things on the island), the Smritika Museum houses a collection of old records and historical displays about the island's past. There's also a cemetery nearby, with frequent spotted deer roaming around. You'll find plenty of informative signs in the area, with details about the earthquake and Japanese occupation during World War II.

  • Anyone interested in the past will want to explore the ruins leftover from British rule, including a church, swimming pool, the state ballroom, and the chief commissioner's residence.

  • If you're lucky enough to be on Ross in the evening, catch the Light and Sound Show, which depicts the island's history in music and colorful lights. Created by Film director and actress Revathi, she tells the story of Ross backed by tons of research and spectacular effects.

  • Although not a great beach area, you can still swim, and there are plenty of activities for water sport enthusiasts. Try Sea Walking, which takes you underwater for 25 minutes (with an oxygen mask) to get up close to the fish and coral that swim in the waters here.
