Rhine Gorge, Germany Cruise Port

Cruising the Rhine River between Rüdesheim and Koblenz will bring you to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley or Rhine Gorge, Germany. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, the Rhine Gorge stretches about 40 miles and is important for not only industrial reasons, but also reasons connected to geology, history, and culture. An ancient pathway, the gorge has been used since prehistoric times as an important trade route. The settlements along the river that have grown through the years still have an old world feel, appealing to the tourist who wants to take a step back in time. Medieval castles dot the landscape high above the river, many built by those whose character may be considered somewhat questionable; demanding tolls from merchant ships trying to make a living helped pay for these swank living quarters. Here are some of our favorite experiences when cruising through the Rhine Gorge, Germany:

  • The Deutsches Eck or "German Corner" is where the Rhine and Moselle Rivers meet, flanked by an impressive statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I (rebuilt after the original was destroyed during World War II). It's a great place for photos, and you can take a break in one of the flower-filled parks or along the grassy promenade.

  • Near the Deutsches Eck is the Basilica of St. Castor (Kastorkirche), built between 817 and 836 and the oldest church in Koblenz. Along with Romanesque construction and traditional furnishings, the church was the site of a number of historical events. The lovely gardens are also worth a visit.

  • One of the loveliest castles or “burgs” is Schloss Stolzenfels. Stolzenfels was originally built in the 13th century; its ruins were given to future Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1823 who rebuilt it as a summer home in Gothic Revival style. The walk to the top provides an excellent view, although the guided tours inside the castle are only in German.

  • Learn more about the history of the area at the Mittelrhein-Museum. The museum showcases more than 2,000 years of the region's part, displaying art, coins, ceramics, furniture, military implements, and much more.
