Positano is a commune and village situated in Italy. It is mostly in the hills that lead down to the coast. It was a port in medieval times and it prospered during the 16th and 17th centuries. However, by the middle of the 19th century, the town was not doing well and a large fraction of the population migrated to America. Positano was at a time a poor fishing village especially during the first half of the 20th century. In the 1950s the area started attracting a large number of tourists. This is partly attributed to the publication of an essay by John Steinbeck in 1953 in Harper's Bazaar.
