Located in the Canadian Province of British Columbia, Port Alberni is cut deep into central Vancouver Island and lies across a strait on the narrow Alberni Island. This is a popular port for docking and trading because it’s so far back from the mighty Pacific Ocean and can often protect wayward boats from the harsher elements. Historically, it’s located in the traditional territories of the Tseshaht and Hupacasath tribes which are First Nations of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council. Many of the places and structures in the Port Alberni area have indigenous names and roots and are rich in the region’s centuries-long history. Cherry and Beaver Creek, the two districts that make up Port Alberni, have a combined population of a little over 25,000 people. While the dual municipalities do receive some revenue from tourism, the economy is rooted in the forest industry which includes the parks department and the lumber and paper industries, as well as farming.
