Overview
Naha is the bustling capital of Okinawa Prefecture, serving as the main gateway for cruises to this sub-tropical Japanese paradise. The city is a vibrant and modern hub that proudly preserves its unique Ryukyuan heritage. Naha perfectly balances its history as the center of the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom with its contemporary role as a lively cultural and commercial center, offering a fascinating blend of traditional and modern attractions.
A cruise stop in Naha is a journey into a dynamic city with a relaxed island vibe. From exploring the historical grandeur of Shuri Castle to navigating the energetic streets of Kokusai Dori, Naha provides a rich and accessible cultural experience. Its convenient port location and excellent public transport make it easy for visitors to discover its culinary delights, artistic traditions, and historical treasures.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shuri Castle was the magnificent palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom and the center of its political and cultural life. Although the main hall is currently being reconstructed after a fire, you can still explore the impressive castle walls, gates, and the surrounding park.
Tip: Take the monorail (Yui Rail) to Shuri Station for easy access to the castle. The walk from the station to the castle grounds is very pleasant.

For a classic sub-tropical experience, head to a nearby beach. While Naminoue Beach is close to the city center, a short ride south to Mibaru Beach (further afield) offers clearer water and pristine sand for sunbathing or snorkeling.
Tip: Naminoue Shrine, perched on a cliff overlooking the closest beach, is a notable and beautiful stop.

Located just off Kokusai Dori, Makishi Public Market is a sensory delight. This two-story market, known as the "Kitchen of Okinawa," is a great place to see a variety of fresh seafood, tropical fruits, local produce, and exotic meats.
Tip: You can buy fresh fish on the first floor and have it cooked for you by one of the small restaurants on the second floor.

For a moment of tranquility, visit the beautiful Fukushuen Garden, a stunning Chinese-style garden. Located a short walk from the Naha Wakasa Terminal, the garden offers a peaceful oasis with ponds, waterfalls, and traditional architecture, symbolizing the historical friendship between Naha and its sister city, Fuzhou.
Tip: The garden is especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft.

This tranquil, traditional garden was the second residence of the Ryukyu Kings. It features a beautiful central pond and a unique fusion of Chinese and Ryukyu design elements, offering a serene escape from the city bustle.
Tip: The garden is a perfect example of the Ryukyu nobility's aesthetic and offers wonderful opportunities for quiet reflection and photography.

For a deeper look into the history and art of Okinawa, visit the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum. This modern complex provides a comprehensive overview of the islands' natural history, culture, and art, from ancient times to the present day.
Tip: The museum is accessible via the Omoromachi monorail station and is a great option for a rainy day.
