Oarai, Japan Cruise Port

On the coast of the Ibaraki Prefecture, Oarai is a semi-populated town with the Naka River flowing through its center. The port, along with being a hub for cruise ships, acts as an aquatic gateway to northern Kanto area. Oarai has a few handicapped-accessible bathing beaches, as well as long patches of beach that stretch across the coastline, offering stunning views of the calm, blue waters. During cruise season, some of the larger beaches become packed with surfers, boaters and swimmers all summer long. The sizeable Aqua World Ibaraki Prefectural Oarai Aquarium features more than 68,000 aquatic animals of approximately 580 species and is a perfect outing for family trips, romantic trysts, or solo exploration. The town’s water fascination is further demonstrated by its unique seaside shrine which at certain times of the year, or during inclement weather, can find itself partially or even fully submerged in the ocean depths.

• Drape yourself in the mystical nature of the seaside Oarai Isosaki Shrine. Its nearness to the ocean makes it a premiere spot of photos, especially at sunset.
   
• Go against the grand and visit the Nakaminato Fish Market, the biggest rival to Tokyo’s world famous Tsukiji Market. The fish is just as good and without the annoying crowds!
   
• Appreciate the eye-catching window paintings on panes large and small at the Oarai Art Museum. Also enjoy water paintings and other works by regional and national artists.
