Narsarsuaq, Greenland Cruise Port

While the cruise port of Narsarsuaq, Greenland may be tiny – fewer than 200 residents – it has great appeal to tourists, who come in droves to visit its glaciers, wildlife, and gemstones. Located in southern Greenland, its Norse roots go back to the 800s; the nearby settlement of Qassiarsuk was founded by Erik the Red. Another claim to fame is the military air base built in 1941 by the United States as a stepping stone from North American factories to the battlefields of Europe during World War II. Its hospital facilities expanded, but were eventually lost in a fire in 1972. With its typical nearly-polar climate, Narsarsuaq attracts those who love to tour the area's fjords and icebergs. Adventurous types can hike along the ridge to get an up-close look, or view it from above via helicopter tour. Here are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Narsarsuaq, Greenland:

  • If interested in the town's military past, visit the Narsarsuaq Museum. Here you'll learn about the air base called Bluie West One through a collection of photographs and other items leftover from wartime. There's also a section the focuses on Norse history and its settlers.

  • Near the Narsarsuaq Airport is the "botanical garden of the Arctic" called the Arboretum Groenlandicum, whose goal is to create a collection of trees and bushes from the Arctic and Northern Hemisphere. There are multiple plant species such as the Siberian larch, Lodgepole Pine, and Sitka Spruce, with more than 50,000 currently on site.

  • With fjords a mainstay of any Greenland trip, you can hike, kayak, or use a guide to see the Tunulliarfik Fjord or the Qooroq Ice Fjord. As you get closer, you'll see that many of the icebergs have run aground and reflect the light in fabulous colors. If you take a boat tour, you might actually get served drinks containing 1,000-year-old ice.

  • History lovers will enjoy the settlement of Erik the Red. You can take a guided walking tour through the reconstructed Norse longhouse and church while marveling that the land here hasn't changed much since it was founded centuries ago.
