Mahajanga, Madagascar Cruise Port

If your knowledge of Madagascar only involves cartoon animals, then cruising to the port of Mahajanga, Madagascar will definitely change your perception. The island of Madagascar can be found near the east coast of Africa in the western Indian Ocean, with Mahajanga (or Majunga) on the northwest coast. It's a favorite spot for many travelers, thanks to great beaches as far as the eye can see and hot, dry weather throughout most of the year. One of the city's most popular spots is the seaside boardwalk (Le Bord), lined with picturesque coconut trees. Established as an important trade port in the 18th century, the French chose Mahajanga as a base of operations in 1895 and turned the island into a French protectorate; this influence remains today, as evidenced by the French international school Collège français Françoise-Dolt. Here are some of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Mahajanga, Madagascar:

  • One of Mahajanga's most spectacular sights is Cirque Rouge, an eroded rock formation whose multiple colors are especially dramatic at sunset. There's also a stream at the bottom, for those who fancy a short hike down.

  • For amazing architecture, take a walk through the old city area which includes Poincaré, Avenue de France, Quai Orsini, and rue du Marechal Joffre. While street names are French, the city's Arabic origins are strong here. A great place to shop and eat, it's close to the seaside promenade.

  • Another famous sight in the city is the centuries-old baobab. In fact, Madagascar as a whole is known for these sprawling trees, although the one here is rumored to be the oldest, in existence for over 1,000 years. The tree has become a symbol of the city, and new visitors are supposed to circle it seven times to honor the area's ancestors and gain their blessing.

  • For some of the city's history, explore the royal shrine of Tstaramandroso and its relics. A guide is suggested as entrance can be limited, but once in, you'll see preserved items such as pieces of clothing, nails, and teeth that belonged to the medieval Sakalava kings.
