Loch Ness, Inverness, Scotland Cruise Port

Nearly everyone is familiar with the cruise port of Loch Ness, Scotland, thanks to its iconic monster. Despite the original photograph of Nessie taken in 1933 exposed as a hoax, her legend lives on. Located in Inverness within the Scottish Highlands, the lake is the second largest in Scotland after Loch Lomond (also famous in song). Also fairly deep for a lake, it has more fresh water than all the lakes in Wales and England put together. There are several villages along the shore of Loch Ness, most notably Drumnadrochit, where you'll find the Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition. Here you can learn more about Nessie, as well as hop a boat tour to attempt and spot her. But even though the Loch Ness Monster is the biggest draw here, there are plenty of other things to do. Here are some favorite experiences when cruising to Loch Ness, Inverness, Scotland:

  • Not far from Drumnadrochit at Strone Point, you'll find the medieval Urquhart Castle. Mostly ruins, it used to be one of the country's largest castles. A tower house remains, where you can view the loch. You can go through on your own or take the guided tour to hear stories of its former glory days.

  • Get back to nature with the Falls of Foyers, where a short walk through a wooded area and along the River Foyers (which flows into Loch Ness) takes you to a lovely waterfall with 165-foot cascade. There are two vantage points; the spray may get you a bit wet, so plan accordingly.

  • At the southwest end of the loch is the small village of Fort Augustus, a nice place to check out local culture and do some shopping. There's also plenty of scenery and wildlife to explore; when it's time to take a break, a batch of British fish and chips hits the spot.

  • The Corrimony Chambered Cairn dates back to the Bronze Age and was used as a collective grave by Neolithic farmers. The chambers and 12 standing stones are fascinating to explore while pondering the belief system of its creators.
