Loch Ewe, Scotland Cruise Port

For a Celtic adventure straight out of folklore, the cruise port of Loch Ewe, Scotland in the United Kingdom combines natural beauty with years of mythology. Located within the Northwest Highlands, this sea loch (or lake) is peopled with residents who speak mostly Scottish Gaelic or Gàidhlig. Their main source of industry is agriculture, more specifically small-scale food production; these areas are called crofting villages. The fishing village of Aultbea is one of the area’s most popular, thanks to the inclusion of hotels and a distillery; the head of Loch Ewe is Poolewe, a charming village surrounded by both picturesque mountains and the sea. Here the weather is relatively mild year-round and very little snow. Those who love fresh seafood will enjoy cod, haddock, and mackerel – and don't forget to finish up with real British scones. Here are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Loch Ewe, Scotland:

  • For those with time to spare, this is an area of great scenic beauty famous for its Midnight Walk. The goal is to walk the 25 miles from Kinlochewe to Poolewe and enjoy some of the most unspoiled nature in existence, and admire the endless stars once darkness falls.

  • Aspiring botanists will enjoy the Inverewe Garden in Poolewe, noted for the large size of its collection. Originally created in 1862, the garden contains more than 2,500 exotic plants and flowers. Especially popular is the rhododendron collection; gardeners might get a special kick out of the exotic vegetable section.

  • If you're looking for a place chock-full of local color, the Loch Ewe Distillery in Aultbea is the place to go. The owners provide a lively tour of what some have called the “Smallest distillery in Scotland” – using a method adopted from the ancient Egyptians.

  • For some history, take in the Arctic Convoys Memorial at Rubha nan Sasan, dedicated to hundreds of sailors lost during World War II. The weather was actually to blame, rather than the enemy; regardless, the memorial's somewhat remote location and the tale of the brave souls who tried to rescue the sailors make for an emotional outing.
