Llle Rousse, Corsica Cruise Port

Between France and Italy in the Mediterranean Sea is the island of Corsica and its northern port of L'Île-Rousse (also L'Ile Rousse or Île Rousse). While Corsica is part of France and has been that way since 1768, the island itself still exhibits Italian influences, which is understandable; while the island's inhabitants have been around since prehistoric times, it once had the Italian name Isola Rossa (Red Island) because of its red color, and Italian was its administrative language until 1848. Thanks to Pasquale Paoli, who wanted to create a northern port for trade, in December of 1765 the town became L’Île-Rousse – making it one of Corsica’s two towns with a French name. With its mild climate all year long, white sand beaches, and pretty paved streets, L'Île-Rousse combines tropical retreat and old world charm. Here are some of our favorite experiences while visiting the cruise port of L'Île-Rousse, Corsica:

  • The solar-powered Phare de la Pietra or Pietra lighthouse is on the highest point of nearby Île de la Pietra, which is linked to the mainland by an easy-to-walk causeway. The Genoese watchtower close to the lighthouse is more archaeologically interesting, and the view from the top is spectacular.

  • The sea stretches along the Promenade a Marinella, where you can take a stroll to any number of incredible beaches, including Plage de Bodri, Algajola, and the palm tree-covered Plage de Lozari.

  • To get in touch with history and do some shopping at the same time, visit the Old Town area, also called the Old Town of Pascal Paoli or le Père de la Patrie (the Father of the Fatherland). One of the highlights is the covered food market featuring 21 classical columns that look like a Greek temple.

  • The Parc de Saleccia is a beautifully landscaped park where you can enjoy the many types of Mediterranean flora found on Corsica. Here you can find varieties of pines, myrtles, fig trees, and more than 100 types of olive trees, along with plenty of colorful flowers. There's also a tearoom on site to have some refreshment afterward.
