Lizard Island, Australia Cruise Port

To see some of the most amazing natural wonders in the world, cruising to the port of Lizard Island, Australia is in order. Located on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, it's one of tropical Queensland's most remote locations; the Lizard Islands group is made up of the approximately six square mile, granite-formed Lizard Island (which formed about 300 million years ago) and the three smaller nearby islands called Palfrey, South, and Bird. The entire island was designated a National Park in 1937 with the water declared a Marine Park in 1974; Ecotourism Australia takes care to ensure that tourism stays eco-friendly. Visitors come from all over to swim in blue waters and spot lizards – which Captain Cook claimed were the only animals he could find during his 1770 visit, thus giving the island its name. Here are some of our favorite experiences while visiting the cruise port of Lizard Island, Australia:

  • Since the island is a national park, where to start? Along with the swimming and snorkeling, there are plenty of other things to do. Birdwatchers will be delighted to find that more than 40 species nest here, including white-bellied sea eagles, pheasant coucals, and plenty of terns.

  • For the true adventurer, bushwalking through Lizard Island is an exhilarating way to spend the day. More intense than an ordinary hike, the island does have different levels so beginners don't find themselves trapped in an unforgiving landscape. It's an excellent way to enjoy the peace of the island and see nature close up.

  • Those who want to stick close to the water can do some marine animal watching. Along with sea turtles, there's an amazing array of other sea life including feather stars, sponges, and sea pens, all protected within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

  • Underwater, there's even more to see. Divers can check out the area called Cod Hole where groups of large Potato Cod get up close and personal. For an even bigger adventure, there are opportunities to dive with Dwarf Minke Whales, who tend to come closer to the reefs around June and July.
