Larantuka, Indonesia Cruise Port

Located on the eastern end of Flores Island, in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, Larantuka is a district and seat capital of the East Flores Regency. The region is over 95% Roman Catholic and holds a strong colonial Portuguese influence. Small cruise ships are able to dock within the harbor while larger ships are required to drop anchor and their passengers tendered ashore. A major tourist destination is Kelimutu, three cratered lakes that flow within the caldera of a volcano. The volcanic gas makes the lakes highly acidic which causes them to change colors whenever the oxidation levels fluctuate. Flores is part of UNESCO’s Komodo National Park as its western coast is one of the few places in which Komodo dragons are found in the wild. Diving and snorkeling locations can be found along the coast, and while the coral was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1992, it’s still a beautiful sight to behold.

• Holy Week is a big deal in Larantuka. Reinha Rosary Cathedral Church celebrates in style, welcoming all into their ancient beautifully decorated house of worship.
   
• The villages of Luba and Bena are filled with traditional houses constructed many centuries ago. Stop by to admire them and maybe learn more from the friendly locals.
   
• Larantuka and its surrounding area has recently become Indonesia’s latest coffee production territory. Look around and you just might see the great machine of coffee production in action.
