Krakow, Poland Cruise Port

If exploring the past leaves you breathless, then cruising to the port of Kraków, Poland is something to add to your bucket list. Dating back to the 7th century, this city located on the Vistula (or Wisla) River is the second largest and one of the oldest in the country. It's also a haven for culture lovers, thanks to its vibrant arts and academics scene – along with being one of Poland's most important economic hubs. Originally a Stone Age settlement, Kraków grew quickly and was a busy trading center by the year 965. The city gained notice again in the late 20th century when Archbishop Karol Wojtyla was named Pope John Paul II, the first Slavic pope in history. Considered one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, the multitude of sights here will leave you wanting more. Here are some of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Kraków, Poland:
  • Within Kraków's Old Town, you'll find the Main Market Square. Dating back to the 13th century, it's one of Europe's largest medieval town squares with historic townhouses, churches, and monuments. There are plenty of shops and food around the square, and the towers from St. Mary's Basilica provide a heavenly backdrop.
  • Speaking of the basilica – also known as the Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven or St. Mary's Church – this is place that can be appreciated by religious and non-religious alike. Between the art inside and the plaintive trumpet tune played each hour, the church's Polish Cathedral style served as a model for other European churches.
  • Like something out of a storybook, the Royal Wawel Castle is a Gothic delight. Built at the command of Casimir III the Great, the castle and Wawel Hill together make up one of the most historically and culturally important sites in Poland. Today, the castle is one of the country's premier art museums.
  • Anyone who has seen the film Schindler's List knows the story of intrepid Kraków businessman Oskar Schindler; visit the atmospheric Oskar Schindler's Factory to get an up-close view of what life was like during World War II for Polish Jews.
