Klaksvik, Faroe Islands Cruise Port

Within the Kingdom of Denmark lie the Faroe Islands; these are an archipelago North Atlantic Ocean and Norwegian Sea, and halfway between Iceland and Norway. The second-largest town is the cruise port Klaksvík in the Faroe Islands, which is located on Borðoy. The settlements were originally founded during Viking times (between the late 8th century to the middle of the 11th century), but it wasn't until the 20th century when modernization and commercial ventures helped make it a key port – and not until the 21st century when improvements in transportation made Klaksvík less isolated: namely, the opening of the Norðoyatunnilin, a two lane undersea tunnel that connects the island of Borðoy with the island of Eysturoy. The scenery coming into the harbor is absolutely breathtaking, thanks to the dramatic mountains that serve as a backdrop. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Klaksvík, Faroe Islands:

  • A modern church built in Old Norse style and using native materials, the Christianskirkjan or Christianschurch was consecrated in 1963. The church resembles classical Viking buildings with a bell tower separate from the rest of it. Two plaques are inside; one is dedicated to sailors who perished during World War II, while the other memorializes the church's namesake, Danish King Christian X.

  • The Norðoya Forminnasavn or Northern Museum is a great place to learn about everyday life in Klaksvík. One room displays tools, utensils, and pictures of the Northern Islands, while the other houses The Chemistry: Originally a draper's shop in 1919, it became of pharmacy in 1932, and many of the bottles are displayed from this time period.

  • The abandoned village of Skálatoftir lets you get in a hike complete with lovely, unspoiled surroundings. Birdwatchers can spot some of the various species which call the island home; puffins hang out in the Faroe Islands during summer months.

  • This is an excellent place for diving, as the area has an abundance of marine life. Should you just wish to watch the scenery as you float by, there are several companies that can keep you dry as you sightsee as well.
