Khor Al Fakkan, United Arab Emirates Cruise Port

Located along the Gulf of Oman in the United Arab Emirates is a cruise port with multiple names: Khorfakkan, Khawr Fakkan, Khor al Fakkan, or Khor Fakkan. The second largest town on the UAE's east coast is located on the bay of Khorfakkan (which translates to "Creek of Two Jaws"). With history that extends to possibly the 3rd millennium B.C., it's also been in various written descriptions since the year 1500. The Portuguese spent a couple hundred years here, only to be invaded by the Persians afterward. By 1765, Khor Fakkan belonged to a sheikh of the Qawasim and continues to do so through the present time. As the only natural deep-sea port in the region and a top port in the Emirates for containers, Khor Fakkann is constantly busy with ship traffic. As an enclave of the somewhat conservative Sharjah, it's a dry town (no alcohol) and revealing bathing suits aren't allowed on the beaches. That said, the clean Khor Fakkan Beach is one of the most popular attractions here. It's also a great place for water sports during the warm, tropical summer days.
Diving is a sought-after pastime here, and there are several dive centers that will help you find the best spots to view marine life, or give lessons to beginners.
The Rifaisa Dam is located in the mountains of Khorfakkan; believed to have been built over a village, you can see the tops of the old houses when the water is calm. The reservoir created by the dam is a serene place to relax and reflect.
Wadi Wurayah is a national park between the towns of Masafi, Khor Fakkan and Bidiyah. Home to hundreds of species of plants and animals, it's also a must-see for the scenic Al Wurayah Falls within the Hajar Mountains. With several endangered species and flowers that only grow in the UAE, it's a beautiful contrast to the busy shipping harbor in town.
