Karlstadt, Germany Cruise Port

Wine lovers will adore a cruise along the Main River in Bavaria to reach the historic town of Karlstadt, Germany. Located in the Main-Spessart district, the town is also called Karlstadt am Main (or in local dialect, Karscht and Karscht am Mee), and it's said to be founded by and named after Charlemagne, the "Father of Europe." It's not far from a popular winemaking area, situated about 16 miles north of the Franconia region and city of Würzburg. Karlstadt dates back to at least the 6th century, and walking through its Old Town still feels like stepping into a time machine. Winemaking has deep roots, too: growing grapes for wine was first mentioned in local documents in 1244. Today, although winegrowing factors into the local economy less than in other parts of Bavaria, it’s still important culturally. Here are some favorite experiences while visiting the cruise port of Karlstadt, Germany:

  • The Stadtgeschichtliches Museum is the place where history buffs can get their fill of the past. Although it's not very large, its location in the center of town makes a nice addition to a walk through the cobblestone streets while absorbing the ambiance.

  • The historic Rathaus or Town Hall, located in the Marktplatz (marketplace) was built in 1422. This beautiful building is especially festive during the winter holidays. During warmer months, you can tour the inside and get a view of the village from its upper level. There's also a little fellow on the roof – mechanical, of course – who sounds his trumpet several times each day.

  • The ruins of Castle Karlsburg loom on a hill over the town. First erected in the 10th century, the castle was mostly destroyed during the German Peasants' War in 1525. The trip to the top is worth it to both explore a piece of history, and for excellent views of Karlstadt and the Main River valley.

  • Of course, there are plenty of wineries not far from town. Take a trip out to Würzburg to visit vineyards such as Staatlicher Hofkeller, Weingut Juliusspital Würzburg, and Weingut Reiss (just a few among many options).
