Kangaroo Island, Australia Cruise Port

For an adventure off of the mainland of South Australia, a cruise through the Indian Ocean will bring you to the port of Kangaroo Island (KI), Australia. The third-largest island after Tasmania and Melville Island, it was once occupied by Australian Aborigines who called it Karta, which means "Island of the Dead." Perhaps not so ironically, then, this population vanished thousands of years ago because of rising sea levels; once the 19th century rolled around, the island was resettled by whalers and seal hunters and eventually became a South Australian colony. KI's largest town is Kingscote at around 2,000 residents, almost half of the island's entire population. With an economy focused on agriculture and tourism, the area is also known for diverse wildlife and has several nature reserves to protect the animals. One of the most popular attractions on KI, Flinders Chase National Park is a vast stretch of wilderness where you can see many species of flora and fauna in their natural habitat. A network of trails and a boardwalks make it easy to get around and see animals like the platypus and kangaroo, as well as amazing geological sights like the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch.
For more marine-based animals, another place to visit is Seal Bay Conservation Park. You can go through on your own or take a guided tour; the latter gets you onto the beach and closer to the action. There is a lot of walking, so good footwear is a must.
KI has no fewer than 50 beaches; one of the favorites is top-ranked Vivonne Bay, which has white sands, clear waters, and excellent surfing conditions. You can also fish here – and might catch a seal or two frolicking nearby.
