Kalmar, Sweden Cruise Port

Cruising through the Baltic Sea, you'll come across the port of Kalmar, Sweden. Located in the southwest, Kalmar used to be one of Sweden's most important cities; not only was it the area of ecclesiastical jurisdiction between 1602 and 1913, but the Kalmar Cathedral (built around 1702) remains as an example of great architecture created during the baroque period. The city itself is an ancient one, where archaeological findings have uncovered the oldest known city seal in Scandinavia, dated around 1255–1267. Today, Kalmar is largely an industrial city, although it has a program in place to reduce fossil fuel use. Like most seaside ports, there’s plenty to do and see, and this is an area that melds the past with the present to keep its tourists entertained and happy. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when traveling to the cruise port of Kalmar, Sweden:

  • One of the most popular places to explore is Kalmar Slott (Kalmar Castle). Begun in the 12th century, it was built to defend the harbor and became an important structure during the 1520 Swedish rebellion against Denmark. Picturesque regardless of season, you can take a self-guided tour at your own pace or check out the princess tours and jousting during the warmer months.

  • Designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, the Domkyrkan or Kalmar Cathedral stands against the skyline as an awe-inspiring and breakthrough creation of its time. Not only is it worth a photo opportunity, it also holds regular services and if you're lucky, you'll catch a concert performed on the amazing organ.

  • The Kalmar läns museum is a treat for archeology and history fans alike. Featuring items from the warship Kronan wreck site and other periods of Kalmar's past, it's the perfect place to while away the hours, especially if the weather keeps you indoors.

  • After a day of exploration, visit the delightfully-scented Gerdas Te och Kaffehandel. Located Kalmar's oldest stone building, the shop sells coffee, tea, cheese, and other delicacies from around the world. You can also find accessories to give as gifts (or to keep for yourself).
