Kalabahi, Indonesia Cruise Port

If floating through a palm tree-lined bay while nearing your destination seems a slice of heaven, then cruising to the port of Kalabahi, Indonesia is a photo opportunity that you simply should not miss. The main town on Pulau Alor (Alor Island), the largest island of the Lesser Sunda Islands, it's also the capital of Alor Regency in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province. Set against a backdrop of mountains which provide spectacular views from the top, the town itself is set on a flat plain which probably attracted the Dutch settlers who founded it in 1911 (in contrast to the rugged terrain nearby, thanks to the island’s volcanic origin). The approximately 60,000 residents depend mostly on agriculture to stimulate their economy, although the tourists who come here to enjoy fantastic snorkeling and diving also contribute. For the best beach in town, visit Pantai Maimol (Maimol Beach). With white sands and calm, clear water it's a relaxing place to sit in the sun or go for a swim or enjoy a coconut drink. Local fishermen sell their daily catch nearby as well.
For snorkeling and diving, the sites around the island are peppered with large fish. Alor Divers is one of the most popular outfits in Kalabahi to set up a diving trip; they can help you do all types of diving, including coral reef and muck diving.
For a taste of local culture, check out the Museum Seribu Moko (Museum of a Thousand Moko). Named for the collection of moko, or bronze drums, housed here, you'll not only find a large range of drums (some of which may be as old as 700 B.C.) but also ceremonial clothes made from bark.
Instead of looking for a restaurant, you can get a sampling of Indonesian cuisine by visiting the many food stalls that are set up on the bank of the harbor each day. Along with various soups, noodles, and fried rice, you'll find other local favorites.
