Iles De La Madeleine, Quebec Cruise Port

In the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the cruise port of Les Îles de la Madeleine or Magdalen Islands in Quebec, Canada is actually closer to the provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, but don't get confused. Thanks to French roots and French-speaking residents, there's no question as to which part of Canada this truly belongs. With six communities, there’s an excellent mix of history and culture, and plenty of activities for everyone. Despite beautiful beaches, the islands are much better for wind sports than swimming, as the water can get cold; in fact, this is one of the best places known to travelers who enjoy windsurfing and kiteboarding. Fortunately enough, these beaches and their dunes connect the islands so you don’t have to hop a ferry to explore each one. Listed below are some of our favorite experiences when cruising to Les Îles de la Madeleine, Quebec:

  • The islands are a paradise for birdwatchers, thanks to the more than 300 species of birds that have been inventoried here. Divided into categories such as nesting, migratory, residents, visiting, and wintering species, you'll find the best places to see birds near the water or in the forest. One place to start is the East Point National Wildlife Reserve located near Grosse-Île; there are multiple tours that offer birdwatching expeditions as well.

  • For those who want to get closer to the water, sea kayaking is a popular pastime here. For equipment rentals, the Parc du Gros Cap near Cap-aux-Meules will help you explore the area's scenic coastal cliffs, bays, and tunnels.

  • For history of the islands' fishermen, check out Le Site D'Autrefois. A previous winner of the Quebec Tourism Awards, the fishing village replica is paired with delightful storytelling by the owner, whose passion is evident.

  • For shopping and great food, visit La Grave; this artisan village includes a wide variety of shops from soap to sand sculptures. Nearby restaurants offer plenty of fresh seafood and you can even stop at the nearby beach to gaze at the waves when you're happy and full.
