Located on the panhandle of Alaska’s southeast region, Hoonah is largely an indigenous community of Tlingit people on Chichagof Island. The major port, Icy Strait Point, is privately owned by a company consisting of 1,500 Alaskan natives. In fishing and logging country, Hoonah is the place to experience America’s last wilderness. The beautiful scenery on the guided woodland walks is complemented nicely with insight into Tlingit history and culture. There are numerous upmarket craft shops promise locally made artisan crafts, as well as regional jams and other treats. Many of the buildings are made from local timber and built in the traditional style by expert Tlingit woodworkers and carpenters. Zip-lining is one of the area’s major draws which offers a stunning view of the expansive forest from above. Other wilderness adventures include dolphin and whale watching, and excursions to view families of brown bears.

• Sample a selection of local brews at Icy Strait Brewing. In a world of many beers, there’s something special about this variety of Alaskan locals. Try some and warm up at the bar or by the fire.
• Take in the wilderness at Icy Strait Point, a prime, expansive destination where one can search for bears, sea lions, and seals. Even bald eagles are a common occurrence!
