Hachijo-jima, Japan Cruise Port

Adventure seekers will get no small thrill cruising to the volcanic island of Hachijo-jima, Japan. Part of the Izu Islands, located in the Philippine Sea, and administered by Tokyo, the approximately 8,000 residents and their ancestors have lived here since at least the Jomon period (anywhere from around 14,500 B.C. to about 300 B.C.). Despite the volcano's presence, the last known eruption was 1606; however, a different type of combustion was present: the island was used to house exiled criminals during the Edo period (between 1603 and 1868). Tourism is a big industry on Hachijo-jima, providing travelers with multiple lodging and activity options. Foodies will love the island’s famous sushi and kusaya, and use of the ashitaba plant (a popular Japanese herb) in dishes such as ashitaba soba, tea, and ice cream. For the trip of a lifetime, here are some favorite experiences for the cruise port of Hachijo-jima, Japan:

  • Thanks to three reef breaks and relatively warm water, the area is popular with surfers. While the black sand beaches may not appeal to those who want to sunbathe, there are plenty of snorkeling and diving spots; these include the main harbor of Sokodo, and Nazumado, which is considered one of the top 10 dive spots in Japan.

  • Another popular outdoor pastime is hiking to the peak of the 2,800 foot high Mt. Hachijo-fuji. The mountain has a trail to follow, and once at the top, you can look right down into its volcanic vent – as well as gaze at the magnificent scenery spread out below.

  • Plant and flower lovers can visit the Hachijo Botanical Park near the airport, featuring a greenhouse and outdoor walking area to view tropical beauties. There's also fauna on the grounds, such as small Chinese deer; the visitor center provides more information about the park, including the popular bioluminescent mushrooms.

  • The Furusato Village in Okago is a fantastic place to get immersed in history. The tamaishigaki, stone walls created by the convicts exiled to the island, surround the paths near the village and create an atmosphere that's a different world than Japan's more modern landscapes.
