Fergusson Island, Papua New Guinea Cruise Port

The exotic sounding D'Entrecasteaux Islands in Papua New Guinea are home to the cruise port of Fergusson Island, named for former Governor-General of New Zealand Sir James Fergusson. At just over 500 square miles, the island is made up mostly of mountains, rain forests, and several volcanoes. Mount Kilkerran, Fergusson's highest peak is actually, an extinct volcano – but if heat is what you're looking for, there are plenty of hot springs and bubbling mud pools around. The population of the entire island is about 13,000 people, with most of it concentrated on the southern coast, within the settlements of Salamo and Mapamoiwa. While the residents are fairly laid-back and traditional, they’re happy to talk to visitors. Thanks to the climate and topography of the island, there’s plenty of diverse wildlife to explore. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Fergusson Island, Papua New Guinea:

  • If you want to get close to an inactive volcano, take a hike from Warluma to the large crater of Mt. Lamanai. You'll not only get an excellent view of the island below, but may also encounter some birds and critters, such as parrots or the rare Fergusson Island striped possum.

  • One of Fergusson's most popular draws is the collection of active thermal springs at Deidei, near Salamo on the eastern side of the island. Here you'll find prehistoric steam vents and salt deposits, and see how locals still used the boiling pools to prepare their meals.

  • Birdwatchers looking for rare species may spot the Goldie's bird-of-paradise and the curl-crested manucode, both of which are unique to PNG. Many cruise lines offer shore excursions specifically for birders, so don't forget the binoculars.

  • You'll encounter plenty of marine life if diving and snorkeling, along with fantastic black coral. Below, there are barracuda and grey sharks, as well as dartfish, eels, sweetlips, and many other types of fish. If you'd rather stay on the beach, you might spot dolphins or whales from shore.
