Syros is a member of the Cyclades Island group in the Aegean Sea. Ermoupolis is its largest town, and the capital of the Cyclades and the entire South Aegean region. Ermoupolis became the cultural, naval, and commercial center for Greece after it gained its independence in 1832. To commemorate the success of the Greek Revolution, the town’s main square has a statue of the important revolutionary figure, Admiral Andreas Miaouli. From the middle ages, Syros was the only Greek island that had a 100 percent Catholic population. However, after years of regime changes and times of war, Catholics make up about 40 percent of the population while the rest is now Greek Orthodox. Because of their religious roots, many spectacular and unique churches can be found throughout the area, along with other examples of traditional and modern architecture. Ermoupolis’ Apollo Theatre is a smaller scale version of La Scala in Milan.

• Be amazed by the stunning Saint Nicholas Church, a Greek Orthodox structure with high-scaling, classical architecture and various icons donated by the Russian Orthodox Church.
   
• In the center of Syros’ town hall is the visually enticing Apollo Theatre. If there’s no performance going on, visitors can explore the grounds for a modest entrance fee.
   
• Climb the steps of Ermoupolis City Hall for a beautiful view of both inside and out. The marble steps lead to the impressive architecture inside, and the picture looking out is a wide-lens view of the entire town that looks even greater at night.
   
• Unwind at Agathopes Beach, a calm sandy getaway beside crystal clear waters, equipped with sunbeds, canopies, welcoming bars, and carefree people.
