Curieuse Island, Seychelles Cruise Port

Since travelers are inquisitive by nature, cruising to the port of Curieuse (Curious) Island, Seychelles is destiny fulfilled. Located in the Indian Ocean near the north coast of the island of Praslin, its red earth and unique coco de mer palms are cultural icons. The island was claimed by the French in 1768 who named it after explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne's schooner La Curieuse. Even through the settlers got rid of the island's giant tortoise population, the area became known for something else not long after: in 1829, Curieuse became a leper colony, remaining as such until 1965. Interestingly, the ecosystem began to thrive, as it was largely protected from human interference. Today, Curieuse is the home of more than 300 Aldabra giant tortoises, along with multiple other species of flora and fauna. Here are some of our favorite experiences while visiting the cruise port of Curieuse Island, Seychelles:

  • A big attraction on the island is the Curieuse Marine National Park. Known for various species of plants and birds, it also includes a large hawksbill turtle rookery. Along with giant takamaka trees, birdwatchers will delight in spotting the rare Seychelles black parrot, which can only be found only here and on Praslin.

  • Close to park, you'll find the island's most famous residents at Baie Laraie. It has a nice beach and a large grassy area where many of the island's Aldabra giant tortoises spend their time; others can be found roaming other parts of the island. Thanks to the shallow waters, you might also catch a glimpse of large humphead parrotfish.

  • The Doctor's House is a Creole-style structure built by Dr. William MacGregor, the Scottish physician who treated leprosy patients on Curieuse. The two floors contain information about the island's history, the doctor's story, and details of the island's conservation effort.

  • Because the Seychelles lie east of Kenya near the equator, it can get hot. After all of the plant and animal watching, a relaxing swim or snorkeling in the blue waters near the Anse St. Jose Beach is just the ticket.
