The secluded port of Churchill in Churchill, Manitoba is an arctic getaway tucked away in the middle of Canada. This big, yet small town of fewer than 1,000 people is located off Hudson Bay and is less than an hour’s drive—slightly longer by snowmobile or dogsled—from the Manitoba/Nunavut border. The vast wilderness surrounding the town is home to a plethora of migratory bird species and various arctic mammals included the illusive polar bear. Beluga whales can often be seen in the seas adjacent to the port. The town is rich with heritage. The Thule people established a presence over 1,000 years ago and the Inuit culture remains an important aspect of the region. There is a museum dedicated to Eskimo history and a number of cultural centers offer first-hand knowledge. The Aurora Borealis can sometimes be seen from Churchill depending on the time of year. Many arctic cruises also begin in or travel through the port.
