Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada Cruise Port

If you enjoy cruising to parts mostly unknown, you'll love cruising to Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, in Canada. With an ancient history and residents who first appeared around 4,000 years ago, there are plenty of adventures to be found in the town known as "good fishing place" (or Ikaluktuutiak). Cambridge Bay is located on Victoria Island in the Kitikmeot Region, and named for Prince Adolphus, the Duke of Cambridge. The largest stop for passenger and research vessels heading through the Arctic Ocean's Northwest Passage, it’s the site of the Canadian High Arctic Research Station; the goals are to research the area and offer economic and environmental improvements. The hearty souls who live here deal with unusual climate: from late May to late July, there's 24-hour sunshine – but December has no daylight at all, just starlight, moonlight, and the Northern Lights. Here are some of our favorite experiences while visiting the cruise port of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut:

  • The Ovayok Territorial Park is one of the best places in the area for spotting native animals, such as muskoxen, caribou, Arctic hare, Arctic fox, and North American brown lemmings, while bird-watchers might see Arctic terns, ptarmigan, and snowy owls. The central feature of the park is Ovayok or Mount Pelly, rising 656 feet and an important landmark for the Inuit people for generations.

  • Bird lovers who didn't get enough at Ovayok can visit Queen Maud Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Canada's largest federally protected nature preserve. It has the largest concentration of nesting geese in the world, including the snowy white Ross's geese.

  • The Arctic Coast Visitor Centre is the place to go for comprehensive information about the region. More like a mini-museum, there are displays of the area's people, history, and culture; you can even rent a bicycle, get a guided tour, buy crafts, check out workshops, and get a fishing license (so you can catch some of the giant char that are so abundant here).

  • For more extensive shopping opportunities, you'll find pieces by well-known local artists such as Inuk Charlie. Various places in town sell Inuit pieces in marble, soapstone, serpentine, antler, bronze, sterling silver and turquoise.
