Bruny Island, Tasmania Cruise Port

Bruny Island is an almost 225-square-mile island off the southeastern coast of Tasmania. The Entrecasteaux Channel lies between the smaller and much larger island and is where many visiting cruise ships drop anchor. The total population is under 1,000 inhabitants, and the two island settlements are called Alonnah and Lunawanna. The island is divided into North and South Bruny with both of these settlements existing in the south (the north is home to Dennes Point, a holiday/vacation village). The landmass is officially classified as an Important Bird Area and houses the world’s largest population of Australia’s rarest bird, the forty-spotted pardalote. It also has a third of the world’s entire population of swift parrots, and about a quarter of a million pairs of the Tasmanian muttonbird. Thirteen of Tasmania’s fourteen endemic birds primarily reside on the island.

  • The Neck is a stunning lookout point leading to a very narrow stretch of beach that connects North and South Bruny.

  • The Cape Bruny Lighthouse is the most iconic landmark on the island. Towering atop the sea-cliff tops in South Bruny National Park, this centuries-old structure offers fantastic panoramic views from the top.

  • South Bruny National Park consists of almost the entirety of South Bruny. Much of the land is left in its natural state and has many hiking trails and exotic wildlife, like giant male kangaroos, running around.

  • Cape Queen Elizabeth is a beachside locale recognizable because of its large arching rock formations. Views of these formations, the Neck and Adventure Bay are outstanding from various points within this cape.
