Bremerhaven, Germany Cruise Port

Founded in 1827 and originally called Wesermunde, the cruise port of Bremerhaven, Germany has the mouth of the River Weser on its eastern bank and is an important European trade route. Its tourist attractions are mostly post World War II, although a few historical buildings remain. Because it's a more modern city, it has features to appeal to the modern traveler, such as a lovely riverside promenade. The Havenwelten area is an interesting contrast of old ships and rusted docks set against a backdrop of newer buildings; historically, many of the settlers to the New World came from this very port. The nearby German Emigration Center, opened in 2005, shows the history of German emigration and is Europe's largest theme museum about emigration; it features interactive exhibits and a database of immigration records. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Bremerhaven, Germany:

  • The Bremerhaven Zoo isn't huge, but it has been around since 1912 in one form or another. Thanks to the climate here, the focus is mainly on animals living in water or northern environments, except for some chimps and marmosets. Animal lovers will find it a charming place to explore.

  • To do some traveling from dry land, check out the Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost. A thoroughly interactive experience, the museum takes you on a journey around the world along the longitudinal meridian 8° east, which includes Switzerland, Italy, Niger, Antarctica, Samoa, and Alaska. Something uncommon in other museums: the temperatures rise and fall to coincide with where you "are," so you'll need functional shoes and layers of clothing!

  • The Shop Window Fishery Harbor is the place to be for eating, drinking, and fun. Thanks to its proximity to the water, fresh seafood is in abundance; you'll also find attractions such as the Sea Fish Cooking Studio (a one-hour cooking lecture) and Expedition Northern Seas (a tour of a research vessel).

  • Boat and history buffs will find the U-2540 German submarine Wilhelm Bauer an interesting trip into yesteryear. Completed before the end of WW II, it was never actually used in the war and eventually converted into a museum ship.
