Amami Oshima, Japan Cruise Port

If you're looking to get away from it all, then a cruise to the port of Amami Oshima, Japan is a great way to experience a lush island vacation without sacrificing modern amenities. Flanked by mainland Japan, Taiwan, China, and South Korea, Amami Oshima is the largest of the Amami Islands and geographically part of Okinawa. Going back to the Japanese Paleolithic period, its culture is different than that of the more populated places in Japan: the island once belonged to the Ryukyu Kingdom, a body that governed most of the Ryukyu Islands for about 400 years. Today, the island is split up into about seven different towns, with Naze having the most activity. Amami Oshima has an economy centered around fishing and agriculture, although its natural beauty and ocean activities are popular tourist attractions. Here are some of our favorite experiences when cruising to Amami Oshima, Japan:
  • Although much of the forest is inaccessible by foot, you can take a guided tour or float by kayak through the gorgeous mangrove forest area. Just south of Naze near the Sumiyo village, this is the country's second-largest mangrove forest and a wondrous piece of nature. Listen to the birdsong as you drift among the trees, and enjoy the serenity.
  • Love to discover what makes every culture unique? Check out a traditional type of music and singing called shima-uta, thought to be repesentative of Amami's musical tradition. A man and woman sing together, utilizing a "call and respond" style of song.
  • Take a short ferry ride to the lovely Kakeroma Island to find great beaches for swimming, diving, and snorkeling around the brilliant coral reefs. You save considerably on the fare if you ride the ferry without a car (not a problem for more cruise passengers).
  • Learn more about island history and culture at Amami Park, which includes an excellent museum. A combined ticket gets you into the nearby Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum of Art.
