Alert Bay, British Columbia Cruise Port

Alert Bay is one of the villages in Cormorant Island, located in the Regional District of Waddington Mountain in British Columbia. The village covers an approximate area of 1.78 square kilometers and plays host to an estimated population of between 1,200 to 1,500 people, as recorded in the 2006 census conducted by the Canadian government. The village itself is regarded as being in Kwakwaka'wakw territory. The Kwakwaka’wakw are the indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest Coast. The rest of the Cormorant Island consists of two Indian Reserves; in the East side of the island lies the Alert Bay 1, and in the West side of the island lies what is called Alert Bay 1A. Featured below are some of the recommended experiences and activities that visitors can enjoy after cruising to Alert Bay, British Columbia:

  • Those interested in the cultural history of the region, should pay a visit to the Alert Bay Museum. It is a single room museum whose major exhibits are a collection of more than 7,000 historical photographs and various memorabilia of the people who took part in the village's evolution.

  • Nature and marine wildlife lovers should not miss out on the opportunity of going to Seasmoke Whale Watching. Visitors get the chance to enjoy a unique whale watching tour on magnificent sailboats that calmly sail in the British Columbian waters guided by professionals who have traversed these same waters severally.

  • Visitors should not miss the opportunity to explore the Namgis Burial Grounds, where one can catch a glimpse of totem poles that are made by the village's indigenous people. The site boasts of having the tallest totem pole in the world and regularly hosts traditional dances in July and August.

  • Guests interested in learning more about the cultural history of the region should pay a visit to the U'mista Cultural Center because the center has a collection of paintings depicting the gift-giving feast, known as a potlatch, conducted by the Namgis people.
