The Dead Sea, a geological marvel located in the Jordan Rift Valley, is the lowest point on the surface of Earth, sitting over 400 meters below sea level. Tip: Avoid getting water in your eyes or mouth, as it is extremely salty and can sting. Don't shave or wax immediately before your visit, as cuts can sting. Limit your time in the water to 15-20 minutes at a time.
Experience the therapeutic benefits by covering yourself in the Dead Sea's black, mineral-rich mud. Resorts and public beaches typically provide access to the mud, which is believed to have rejuvenating properties for the skin.
Tip: Slather the mud on your body, let it dry for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse it off in the Dead Sea for soft, refreshed skin. Most resorts have showers for after-sea rinsing.
Many day tours from Aqaba will take you to a Dead Sea resort (e.g., Mövenpick, Hilton, Crowne Plaza) where you can purchase a day pass. This provides access to private beaches, fresh-water showers, changing rooms, and sometimes swimming pools and restaurants, enhancing your experience.
Tip: Check with your tour operator or cruise line which resort is included in your excursion, or research options if planning independently. Day passes can be costly but offer comfort and convenience.
Gain historical and geological insight at the Lowest Point on Earth Museum, often part of the Panorama Dead Sea Complex. You can also venture up to Lot's Cave, believed to be where the biblical figure Lot and his daughters took refuge after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Tip: The museum offers educational displays about the Dead Sea's formation and its receding levels. The walk to Lot's Cave provides stunning views.
Combine your Dead Sea visit with a trip to the nearby Baptism Site (Al-Maghtas) at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is traditionally believed to be the place where Jesus Christ was baptized by John the Baptist.
Tip: This site is deeply significant for Christian pilgrims. Dress modestly and be prepared for walking. It's usually part of organized tours due to its separate location from the main Dead Sea resorts.
