Overview
Da Nang is a vibrant coastal city in Central Vietnam, recognized for its long, sandy beaches, modern infrastructure, and strategic location as a gateway to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Once a quiet fishing village and later a major American airbase during the Vietnam War, Da Nang has rapidly transformed into one of Vietnam's most dynamic and popular destinations. It boasts iconic bridges, impressive pagodas, and stunning natural landscapes, including the Marble Mountains and the Son Tra Peninsula. The city serves as a hub for both domestic and international tourism, balancing its contemporary development with deep historical roots and a relaxed beach vibe.
Da Nang is a very popular and frequently visited cruise port of call for itineraries exploring Southeast Asia. Cruise ships typically dock at Tien Sa Port, located approximately 10 km (6 miles) from downtown Da Nang. While Tien Sa is a busy cargo port, it also has facilities to accommodate large cruise ships and often offers shuttle services to the city center. Smaller cruise ships might occasionally dock closer at the Han River Port. Da Nang's location also makes it a convenient access point for excursions to the nearby UNESCO World Heritage sites of Hoi An Ancient Town, the Imperial City of Hue, and the My Son Sanctuary. A visit to Da Nang offers cruise passengers a diverse experience, from modern city sights and beautiful beaches to profound historical and cultural explorations.
Journey to Sun World Ba Na Hills, a mountain resort featuring a famous cable car system (one of the longest in the world) that ascends to a European-themed village. The absolute highlight is the Golden Bridge (Cau Vang), an iconic pedestrian bridge held aloft by two giant stone hands, offering breathtaking panoramic views.
Tip: This is a full-day excursion due to travel time and the size of the complex. Go early to avoid the biggest crowds, especially at the Golden Bridge.
Discover the Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son), a cluster of five limestone and marble hills named after the five elements. Explore their mysterious caves, grottoes, pagodas, and temples. Climb to the peaks for stunning panoramic views of Da Nang and My Khe Beach.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes as there are many steps and uneven paths. You can take an elevator up for a fee if you prefer to avoid the initial climb.
If your cruise is in port on a Saturday or Sunday evening, don't miss the spectacular Dragon Bridge (Cau Rong) fire and water show. At 9:00 PM, the dragon's head breathes fire and then water, creating a captivating display of light and sound over the Han River.
Tip: Arrive early to get a good spot along the Han River waterfront. Many restaurants and cafes offer great views.
Spend some relaxing time at My Khe Beach, one of Vietnam's most famous and beautiful stretches of sand. Enjoy the soft white sand, clear waters, and palm trees. It's an ideal spot for swimming, sunbathing, or a leisurely stroll.
Tip: The beach is easily accessible from the city center. There are public facilities and beachfront restaurants available.
Take an excursion to the charming Hoi An Ancient Town, a beautifully preserved trading port dating from the 15th to 19th centuries, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander through its narrow, lantern-lit streets, admire the unique architecture, and visit the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge.
Tip: Hoi An is approximately a 45-minute to 1-hour drive from Da Nang. It's especially magical in the late afternoon/evening when the lanterns illuminate the town.
Head to the Son Tra Peninsula (Monkey Mountain) to visit the majestic Linh Ung Pagoda, home to the towering Lady Buddha statue. Standing at 67 meters (220 feet) tall, it's one of Vietnam's tallest statues, offering a serene spiritual atmosphere and panoramic views of the coastline.
Tip: Keep an eye out for mischievous monkeys in the surrounding areas of the pagoda. The views from here are fantastic.
