Explore the magnificent Cuenca Cathedral (Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Gracia), which dates back to the 12th century. It is a striking example of Spanish Gothic architecture, with a beautiful interior, impressive stained-glass windows, and a rich history.
Tip: Look for the cathedral's unique modern art installation in the windows, which provides an interesting contrast to the ancient stone.
The San Pablo Bridge (Puente de San Pablo) is an iron footbridge built in 1903 that connects the old town to the former Convent of San Pablo, now a Parador hotel. The bridge offers vertigo-inducing but rewarding views of the Hanging Houses and the Huécar gorge.
Tip: If you are afraid of heights, you can still get excellent photos of the houses from a viewpoint on the old town side of the gorge without having to cross the bridge.
Wander through the Plaza Mayor, the heart of the old city, and the surrounding cobblestone streets. This main square is home to the cathedral, a charming fountain, and several cafes and restaurants. The entire old town, with its narrow alleyways and unique shops, is a joy to explore
Tip: Take some time to get lost in the winding streets, as you'll discover hidden courtyards, quaint shops, and unexpected viewpoints.
While not in Cuenca itself, a popular side trip is to the Enchanted City (Ciudad Encantada), a natural park with bizarre rock formations. These limestone formations, sculpted by erosion, resemble figures, animals, and objects, and are a fascinating natural wonder.
Tip: Check if your excursion includes this park, as it requires transportation outside of the city. Wear sturdy shoes for the walking trails.
After a day of exploring, indulge in the local cuisine of the Castilla-La Mancha region. Be sure to try traditional dishes like morteruelo (a game pâté), ajoarriero (a garlic and cod dish), or the iconic cordero asado (roast lamb).
Tip: Many local restaurants offer a menú del día (menu of the day) for lunch, which is a great value and a fantastic way to try several regional dishes.
