Remote Coastal Gem, Artistic Community, Rugged Wilderness

4.9/5 ⭐Google 600+ Reviews | A+ Better Business Bureau

Overview
Cortes Island is a tranquil, remote destination nestled in the northern Gulf Islands of British Columbia. It's known for its stunning natural environment, deep connection to nature, and vibrant, engaged local community. The island is surrounded by the clear, cool waters of the Salish Sea and features old-growth forests, beautiful freshwater lakes, and secluded beaches. Unlike major city ports, Cortes offers an escape into the pristine Pacific Northwest wilderness, appealing to those who appreciate quiet exploration, kayaking, and local arts and culture.
Historically, the island is the traditional territory of the Klahoose First Nation, whose presence and history are deeply woven into the land and waters. Today, the infrastructure is minimal, focusing primarily on the small communities of Manson's Landing and Whaletown. There are no large resorts or major retail centers, but visitors will find independent bookstores, organic farms, and artisan studios. Its low-key, rustic charm is its main draw, providing an authentic look at remote coastal life in Canada's West Coast.
This easy-to-moderate trail offers scenic views of the bay, moss-covered forests, and access to a beautiful tidal lagoon and beach perfect for tide-pooling.
Tip: Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, as some parts of the trail can be rooty or muddy.
Learn about the unique history of the island, from the Klahoose First Nation heritage to its early pioneer settlements and the development of the close-knit community.
Tip: The museum often features special exhibits on local ecology and the island's unique history.
A small, popular park offering a lovely sandy beach, picnic areas, and great views across the water to nearby islands. It’s an ideal spot for a relaxing picnic lunch.
Tip: This beach is one of the best spots on the island for catching a magnificent sunset, if your ship stays late.
Since the ocean waters can be cold, Hague Lake offers warm, fresh water for paddling and swimming, surrounded by a protected park area near Manson's Landing.
Tip: Rent your equipment in Manson's Landing first; the lake is perfect for beginner paddlers due to its calm surface.
Cortes has a thriving artistic community; look for signs directing you to studios selling pottery, paintings, wood crafts, and handmade jewelry.
Tip: Always call ahead or check posted hours, as many small studios are only open by appointment or during limited hours.
A beautiful, sheltered inlet perfect for nature viewing, accessible by a short walk or, ideally, by boat. The calm waters are excellent for spotting seals and marine birds.
Tip: Pack snacks and drinks as there are no services or shops located near this natural area.
