Overview
Cook's Bay (or Baie de Cook) is one of the two magnificent, deep-cut bays on the heart-shaped island of Moorea, French Polynesia. Named after the famous explorer Captain James Cook, who anchored here in 1777, the bay is renowned for its breathtaking, dramatic landscape. Jagged, emerald-green volcanic peaks, including the famous Mount Rotui, rise steeply from the water's edge, creating a postcard-perfect panorama that makes Moorea feel like a true tropical paradise.
Moorea, often considered Tahiti's sister island, offers a tranquil contrast to the main island's busy capital, Papeete. The area around Cook's Bay is the perfect base for exploring the island’s interior, which is covered in lush tropical foliage and famous for its pineapple plantations. For cruise visitors, the port provides immediate access to the crystal-clear lagoon waters, a rich Polynesian culture, and unforgettable outdoor adventures like snorkeling and scenic drives.
Explore the protected turquoise waters of the lagoon, often including opportunities to snorkel with friendly stingrays and small reef sharks in shallow sandbars.
Tip: Choose a tour that visits a motu (small islet) for an authentic, beachside Polynesian lunch.
Travel up the winding road through the tropical forest and pineapple fields to this iconic viewpoint for panoramic views of both Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay.
Tip: Be sure to look for the ancient stone ruins of Polynesian temples, known as marae, near the parking area.
Circumnavigate the island's 60 km coastal road to discover hidden beaches, local villages, and other scenic spots at your own pace.
Tip: Stop at the many roadside fruit stands to buy fresh, delicious Moorea pineapples and tropical juices.
Take a quick tour of the Manutea Tahiti factory, often located inland, to see how local pineapples are processed into juice, liquors, and rum (though only the juice is for everyone!).
Tip: Try the fresh pineapple juice sample, as Moorea's pineapples are famous for their unique sweetness.
The warm, clear waters offer spectacular visibility for seeing vibrant coral reefs, schools of tropical fish, sea turtles, and other magnificent marine life.
Tip: Even if you are not certified, some operators offer beginner-friendly helmet diving experiences where you walk on the sea floor.
This is one of the main coastal villages where you can see traditional Polynesian life, visit small markets, and browse for locally made crafts and wood carvings.
Tip: The village often has small, independent shops where you can find unique souvenirs, including Tiare flower-scented soaps.
