Overview
Colorado Springs, a city of natural wonders and national significance, is nestled against the dramatic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains and the iconic Pikes Peak. Known for its breathtaking scenery, crisp mountain air, and a rich history, it is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and a hub for military and Olympic history. While you won't find a cruise ship here, you will find a destination that offers a truly unique American experience.
A visit to Colorado Springs is an opportunity to connect with nature, explore legendary landmarks, and learn about the city's role as "Olympic City USA." From the unique rock formations of the Garden of the Gods to the historic summit of Pikes Peak, there is an adventure waiting for every type of traveler.
The Garden of the Gods Park is a national natural landmark famous for its towering red sandstone formations. You can drive, hike, or bike through the park, marveling at the unique geological features like the Kissing Camels and Balanced Rock. Entry to the park is free.
Tip: Stop at the Visitor & Nature Center for a great view of the park and Pikes Peak. The best light for photography is in the early morning or late afternoon.
Standing at 14,115 feet, Pikes Peak is one of America's most famous mountains. You can reach the summit by driving the Pikes Peak Highway, taking a guided tour, or, most famously, by riding the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The views from the top are said to have inspired the song "America the Beautiful."
Tip: The weather at the summit can be dramatically different from the base. Dress in layers, and be aware of the effects of high altitude.
Colorado Springs is the home of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center, and the new U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum is a world-class institution. Its interactive exhibits tell the inspiring stories of athletes and the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Tip: The museum's architecture is stunning, and the exhibits are highly engaging for all ages.
South of the city, the North Cheyenne Cañon Park offers a scenic drive into a beautiful mountain canyon. The highlight is Seven Falls, a series of seven magnificent cascades that plunge 181 feet down a granite cliff. You can take a scenic elevator to a viewing platform or climb a series of stairs for a closer look.
Tip: Seven Falls is particularly beautiful at night when it is illuminated by lights.
Just north of Colorado Springs, the U.S. Air Force Academy is a top military institution with a beautiful campus. The Visitor Center and the stunning Cadet Chapel are open to the public, offering a glimpse into the life of a cadet and some truly impressive modern architecture.
Tip: Check the academy's website for updated visitor information, as access can change due to security or events.
The historic Broadmoor is a grand resort that has been a Colorado Springs landmark for over a century. You can wander its beautiful grounds, admire the architecture, and have a meal or a drink at one of its many restaurants and bars to experience a slice of luxury history.
Tip: The resort also owns the Seven Falls attraction, making it a convenient base for exploring.
