Cody is known as the "Rodeo Capital of the World," and from June 1st to August 31st, it hosts a professional rodeo every single night. The Cody Stampede Rodeo is a classic Western event that features bull riding, bronc riding, and barrel racing. It's a fun and exciting experience for the whole family.
Tip: Buy your tickets in advance online, as the rodeo is a very popular attraction, especially on weekends.
This scenic byway, a 52-mile drive along the North Fork of the Shoshone River, is the main road from Cody to the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. The drive itself is a stunning adventure, with towering mountains, dramatic canyons, and a good chance of spotting wildlife like elk, moose, and bighorn sheep.
Tip: Take your time on this drive. There are plenty of pull-offs for photos, and you'll want to stop and admire the scenery.
Old Trail Town is a collection of 26 authentic, historic cabins and buildings from the late 19th century, all moved to one location. It includes the cabin used by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a saloon frequented by Buffalo Bill, and graves of famous Western figures. It offers a tangible look into the lives of the early pioneers.
Tip: This is a great, family-friendly activity that provides a unique historical perspective on the West.
Every evening (from June through September) before the rodeo, the Cody Gunfighters put on a family-friendly gunfight reenactment on the street in front of the Irma Hotel. It's a fun and theatrical performance that captures the essence of the Old West.
Tip: Arrive early to get a good spot and a seat on the benches.
The Irma Hotel was built by Buffalo Bill in 1902 and named after his daughter. It is still a beautiful, functioning hotel and a National Register of Historic Places site. Its grand cherrywood bar, a gift from Queen Victoria, is a must-see.
Tip: Stop in for a meal or a drink to soak in the atmosphere and history.
