Overview
Chitwan National Park is Nepal's first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, located in the subtropical inner Terai lowlands of south-central Nepal. The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity, particularly its success in conserving the endangered One-Horned Rhinoceros and the Royal Bengal Tiger. It covers approximately 952 square kilometers of dense forest, marshland, and grassland.
Chitwan is not a cruise port but is a major inland tourist destination, typically accessed via a long bus ride or a short flight from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Bharatpur airport, followed by a short transfer to the park's gateway village, Sauraha. A visit here offers an unforgettable experience, combining thrilling wildlife viewing with exposure to the unique Tharu indigenous culture of the region.
Participate in a guided safari, either by open-top jeep or on foot, to track and observe wildlife, including the famous One-Horned Rhinoceros, deer, monkeys, and potentially the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger.
Tip: Jeeps cover more ground, while walking safaris offer a quieter, more intense experience with a highly trained guide (always required).
Paddle silently down the Rapti River in a traditional dugout canoe, which offers the best chance to spot marsh mugger and gharial crocodiles basking on the riverbanks, as well as a huge variety of water birds.
Tip: Go in the early morning for better wildlife activity and to catch the beautiful mist over the river.
Observe baby elephants and learn about the breeding and conservation efforts of the National Trust for Nature Conservation. This center plays a crucial role in protecting and maintaining the elephant population in the region.
Tip: The best time to visit is often late afternoon when the elephants return from bathing or foraging.
Attend a traditional Tharu stick dance performance in the evening, which is usually energetic and accompanied by local music. You can also take a tour of a Tharu village to learn about their unique, traditional lifestyle and architecture.
Tip: This is a great way to support the local indigenous community and learn about their culture.
Chitwan is a paradise for bird lovers, with over 500 species recorded. Join an expert bird guide in the early morning to find kingfishers, eagles, egrets, and many other colorful species in the riverine forest and wetlands.
Tip: The area near the twenty thousand lakes (Bis Hazar Tal) is a particularly rich area for migratory birds.
See efforts to save the critically endangered gharial crocodile, known for its long, thin snout. The center collects eggs from the river, hatches them, and releases the juveniles back into the wild to boost their numbers.
Tip: This center provides valuable insights into the conservation challenges facing the species.
