Overview
Champion Islet (Isla Champion) is a tiny, uninhabited volcanic islet located just off the coast of Floreana Island in the Galapagos Archipelago, Ecuador. Despite its diminutive size, it is a critically important site within the Galapagos National Park, renowned for its exceptionally clear waters, vibrant underwater ecosystems, and significant populations of diverse seabirds and marine life. The islet itself is rugged and primarily serves as a nesting and resting ground for numerous species.
Champion Islet is a specialized visitor site for Galapagos expedition cruises and liveaboards. Due to its fragile ecosystem and small size, direct landings on the islet by cruise passengers are not permitted. Instead, visits are conducted via pangas (zodiac boats) for coastal cruising around its shores, and via snorkeling excursions in its surrounding pristine waters. These meticulously controlled visits, always accompanied by a certified naturalist guide, aim to provide intimate wildlife encounters while ensuring minimal human impact on this delicate environment. A visit to Champion Islet offers cruise passengers unparalleled opportunities for world-class snorkeling and observing a concentrated array of Galapagos wildlife in a truly unspoiled setting.
Dive into the crystal-clear waters surrounding Champion Islet for an incredible snorkeling experience. The shallow, protected bay is teeming with marine life, including playful Galapagos sea lions, white-tipped reef sharks, rays, turtles, and a dazzling array of colorful tropical fish.
Tip: Your cruise will provide snorkeling gear. Be prepared for slightly cooler water temperatures, and a wetsuit (often provided) will enhance your comfort and time in the water.
Take a slow and deliberate panga (zodiac boat) ride around the perimeter of Champion Islet. This allows for close-up observation of the various seabirds that nest and rest on its rocky cliffs, including Blue-footed Boobies, Nazca Boobies, Frigatebirds, and Red-billed Tropicbirds.
Tip: Bring binoculars for detailed viewing of the birds and their nesting habits. Your naturalist guide will point out key species.
Champion Islet is one of the few places in the world (and the only one near Floreana) where the critically endangered Floreana Mockingbird (Mimus trifasciatus) still survives. Keep a keen eye out for this unique endemic species during your panga ride.
Tip: Ask your naturalist guide to help you identify this elusive bird, which is a rare and special sighting.
While not guaranteed, the waters around Champion Islet are occasionally visited by the charming Galapagos Penguins. Keep a lookout for these small, endemic penguins darting through the water while snorkeling or perched on the rocks during your panga tour.
Tip: Penguins are more commonly seen in cooler water periods, but sightings can happen year-round. They are fast swimmers!
Capture the stunning natural beauty of Champion Islet, with its rugged volcanic rocks, the contrasting white guano streaks from the birds, and the vibrant turquoise of the surrounding ocean. It offers excellent opportunities for landscape and wildlife photography.
Tip: Use a waterproof camera or protective case if you plan to take photos while snorkeling or from the panga, as splashes are common.
Your certified naturalist guide will provide in-depth information about Champion Islet's fragile ecosystem, its geological formation, and the ongoing conservation efforts by the Galapagos National Park to protect its unique wildlife and prevent invasive species.
Tip: Engage with your guide and ask questions to deepen your understanding of this vital protected area within the Galapagos.
