Overview
Cephalonia (Kefalonia) is the largest of the Ionian Islands in Greece, located in the Ionian Sea off the west coast of mainland Greece. It is celebrated for its breathtaking natural beauty, encompassing dramatic limestone cliffs, lush green landscapes, charming traditional villages, and some of the most famous and beautiful beaches in Greece. The island's capital, Argostoli, is a lively and welcoming port city situated on a large, sheltered natural harbor. Cephalonia offers a unique blend of vibrant town life, serene natural escapes, and fascinating geological phenomena.
Argostoli is a very popular and frequent cruise port of call for Eastern Mediterranean and Greek Isles itineraries. Cruise ships typically dock directly at the Port of Argostoli, which is conveniently located along the main harbor promenade, placing passengers directly in the heart of the town. For larger vessels, or when the main pier is occupied, ships may anchor in the bay and tender passengers ashore to the same central location. A visit to Cephalonia (Argostoli) offers cruise passengers a diverse array of experiences, from exploring charming town streets and indulging in local cuisine to venturing out to world-famous beaches and mystical underground lakes.
Step off the ship and immediately immerse yourself in Argostoli. Stroll along the scenic promenade and harbor, watch for the famous Caretta-Caretta (loggerhead) sea turtles, and cross the impressive De Bosset Bridge. Explore Lithostroto Street, the main pedestrian shopping street, and visit Vallianos Square, the central hub with cafes and shops.
Tip: The town is very walkable from the cruise pier. Taxis are also readily available near the port if you prefer not to walk far.
Embark on an iconic excursion to Melissani Cave, a truly magical subterranean lake. Take a short boat ride across its crystal-clear turquoise waters, where sunlight streams through a collapsed roof, creating mesmerizing blue hues and illuminating the cave's interior.
Tip: The best time to visit for optimal sunlight effects is generally between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Tours often combine this with nearby Drogarati Cave.
Journey to the world-famous Myrtos Beach, consistently ranked among Greece's most beautiful beaches. Admire its dramatic crescent-shaped shoreline, brilliant white pebbles, and breathtaking turquoise waters from a panoramic viewpoint above. While swimming is possible, many tours offer a photo stop due to its distance and the time involved.
Tip: This is a must-see for its incredible photographic opportunities. Wear comfortable shoes as there are many steps down to the beach if you choose to descend.
Explore Drogarati Cave, a magnificent cavern estimated to be 150 million years old. Descend into its impressive main chamber, known for its excellent acoustics (sometimes used for concerts) and stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations.
Tip: The cave is cool and damp, so bring a light jacket. The path can be slippery in parts, so wear appropriate footwear.
For a more relaxed beach experience closer to Argostoli, head to Makris Gialos Beach or Platis Gialos Beach in the nearby Lassi area. These organized beaches offer golden sand, clear waters, sunbeds, umbrellas, and often watersports facilities.
Tip: These beaches are a short taxi ride or bus journey from Argostoli town, making them convenient for a few hours of sun and swim.
Consider a longer excursion to the charming villages of Fiscardo or Assos (typically combined on tours due to their northern location). Fiscardo is a picturesque fishing village famous for its Venetian architecture that survived the 1953 earthquake, while Assos is known for its tranquil atmosphere and a Venetian castle perched on a peninsula.
Tip: These villages offer stunning scenery, quaint tavernas, and a glimpse into Kefalonia's unspoiled beauty, but require more travel time. Check with your cruise line for available tours.
