Overview
Casco Viejo (also known as Casco Antiguo) is the historic district of Panama City, Panama. Founded in 1673, it is the modern city's heart and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its beautifully restored colonial and neoclassical architecture. Casco Viejo sits on a small peninsula and is defined by its grid of cobblestone streets, vibrant plazas, and historic churches. It contrasts sharply with the skyscrapers of the modern Panama City skyline visible just across the bay.
While most large cruise ships dock at the Amador Cruise Terminal or Fuerte Amador (Pacific side, near the entrance of the Panama Canal), Casco Viejo is the premier historical excursion site, easily accessible via a short ride from the port. Visiting Casco Viejo is an immersive experience that allows travelers to step back in time, explore Panama's rich history, and enjoy its cultural revitalization, which includes artisan shops, local cafes, and music.
Simply wander the narrow cobblestone streets, which are perfect for walking. Stop at the main public spaces, such as Plaza de Francia, Plaza Bolívar, and the central Plaza Mayor (or Plaza de la Independencia).
Tip: Start your walk early in the morning to enjoy the cool air and take great photos before the crowds arrive.
See the beautiful, historic cathedral on the Plaza Mayor, notable for its twin towers inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Its restoration showcases the area's architectural beauty.
Tip: If the cathedral is open, step inside to see the serene interior and high ceilings.
Walk along this scenic seawall, which offers incredible panoramic views of the modern Panama City skyline, the Bay of Panama, and ships waiting to enter the Panama Canal.
Tip: This is a great spot to browse local crafts and souvenirs sold by indigenous artisans.
Visit the Church of San José to see its famous wooden altar, which is covered in gold leaf. According to local legend, the altar was saved from the pirate Henry Morgan by being painted black.
Tip: The interior is very dark, making the shimmering altar a stunning sight.
This engaging museum provides a detailed look at the challenging and significant history of the Panama Canal's construction, from initial French attempts to its eventual completion by the Americans.
Tip: The exhibits are highly educational and a great way to understand the region's global importance.
Stop at one of the many local bakeries or ice cream shops for a cool treat, or grab a refreshing raspa'o (shaved ice with flavored syrup), a popular Panamanian snack.
Tip: Look for places serving hojaldras (fried dough) for an authentic local breakfast snack.
